How to choose right Bitumen for our application?

One of the common questions which is normally asked by the bitumen Buyers or those who have already entered to Bitumen Business is that: How to recognize the right Bitumen which can match exactly with our purpose? or Which type of Bitumen is mostly applicable to our purpose? Or How to choose best type of Bitumen to resolve our needs and purposes?

Here we are going to answer these regular questions:

In any country, bitumen is one of the most important products in its Construction industry. This is because, apart from road construction applications, bitumen is also used in different industries like Building insulation and roof insulation.

It is important to use first-class bitumen products in road construction, because the application of low-quality bitumen may cause the roads to crumble and crack in short time. This issue is also important for the health of cars and their owners to prevent the accidents.

For this aim, we must know the main types of bitumen and their main applications as the following.

Bitumen types: 1. Penetration grade bitumen

Penetration grade Bitumen is the degree of penetration of bitumen that the manufacturers produce in the refinery with different viscosity or stickiness. Experts test this type of bitumen according to its degree of hardness, which determines its degree of penetration. Bitumen degrees of penetration are between 15 and 450. But most of the road builders use bitumen products with penetration grade between 25 and 200. Experts control a specific test to determine the number of bitumen, the degree of penetration. In this test, they control the lubrication of the bitumen with oil to a certain extent to measure the hardness of the bitumen. Penetration grade bitumen products are a popular and common choice for use in the road construction industry. Bitumen types: 2. blown bitumen or Oxidized Bitumen

Blown bitumen is the result of refined bitumen, which in the next steps, the manufacturers blow into it with Hot air. As a result, blown bitumen is obtained from the process of blowing hot air at a certain temperature. In this process, bitumen molecules react with air oxygen and become compounds with heavier molecular weight. In this way, the content of asphaltene and maltene in the bitumen increases, which makes the blown bitumen harder. Hence, its malleability and reaction to heat is less. For this reason, in addition to its use in road surfacing, blown bitumen is also used to insulate pipes and house roofs. Bitumen types: 3. Liquid bitumen

Liquid bitumen or cutback bitumen is a type of bitumen that is included in the penetration grade bitumen category. Manufacturers of liquid bitumen reduce the viscosity of this bitumen by applying a type of volatile oil. That way, after they apply the volatile oil to the bitumen, the oil evaporates and the bitumen regains its original viscosity.

Penetration degree bitumen is thermoplastic material and their viscosity is different at different temperatures. For example, in road construction it is important that bitumen is fluid when applied to the road. Also, after applying the bitumen, it should return to its original hardness.

This is where liquid bitumen is useful, because this bitumen can maintain its fluid state even at lower temperatures. The evaporation time of solvents and the viscosity of liquid bitumen depend on various factors such as the dilution of volatile oil and its volatility.  If you are interested in the Price of Liquid Bitumen please contact our sales team (sales@parsbitumen.com) in Pars Bitumen Company, they will help you.

Bitumen types: 4. Bitumen emulsion

Emulsion bitumen is a type of penetrating grade bitumen that has a two-phase system with heterogeneous liquids. One of these liquids is mixed drop by drop in another liquid. Therefore, in the process of producing bitumen emulsion, the producers mix bitumen liquid in water or another liquid and create emulsion bitumen.

Due to the production process of emulsion bitumen, this bitumen can be cationic or anionic in nature, which experts prove with an electrochemical test. In addition, the stability of bitumen emulsion depends on several factors, which can be the types of bitumen emulsifier and their amount, amount of bitumen, size of bitumen drops and mechanical forces.  5. Polymer modified bitumen

Producers of polymer modified bitumen make it by modifying the strength and flow characteristics of penetration grade bitumen by adding polymer compounds. Now these polymers can be plastic or rubber. In general, the purpose of applying polymer compounds to bitumen is to change its strength and viscoelastic properties.

For example, adding polymer to bitumen can change and increase its integrity, breaking strength and ductility properties. Some common polymer compounds used in the production of polymer modified bitumen are: styrene block copolymer, natural and recycled rubber polymers and thermoplastic polymers. The higly used Bitumen for Road construction is Bitumen 60/70.

And commonly use Oxidized (Blown) Bitumen is 115/15 grade.
