Gilsonite is a natural Bitumen, in the shape of pure resinous Rock similar to hard petroleum asphalt found in nature which is called Natural Asphalt, Natural Bitumen, Asphaltite, or Asphaltum. One of the best qualified Gilsonite is found in Iran Mines located in west of country. It is soluble in aromatic and aliphatic solvents, as well as petroleum asphalt. Gilsonite is a fragile and can be converted into a dark brown powder packed in 25 kg craft bags.

What makes Gilsonite so special is its unique natural combination, enriched by Nitrogen, Beta-Carotenes and with low sulfur. This makes Gilsonite a multipurpose additive, high-performance, and a cost-effective solution in different applications. Gilsonite is consumed in many countries world-wide for different applications such as production of paint, ink, and stain, used in Iron casting, as an Asphalt binder and recycled Asphalt to build roads with longer life time, improves wellbore stability, drilling efficiencies (drilling fluid additives), and filter cake development. Gilsonite® uintaite forms a physical and chemical bond with permeable formations, creating an effective seal to prevent the passage of drilling fluid. By uniquely functioning as both a malleable and solid plugging agent, Gilsonite® controls fluid loss and seepage, prevents lost circulation and protects reactive and low-reactive shale surfaces, even at elevated bottomhole temperatures.

HP/HT wells, shales and underpressured zones require specialized drilling fluids and wellbore-strengthening techniques. Adding Gilsonite® uintaite to an OBM, SBM or WBM strengthens the well by:

  • Reducing pore pressure transmission and sealing micro-fractures in shale and low-porosity sands

As an asphalt binder modifier, the unique properties of Gilsonite® uintaite make a road that is less susceptible to high-temperature and deformation performance issues. When these modified binders are used in recycled asphalt pavements, Gilsonite® adds back what time has taken from the old asphalt, making it easier to use more of this recycled material.
