Gilsonite (Natural Asphatl)

Gilsonite
Gilsonite (Natural Asphalt) – High-Quality Natural Hydrocarbon by Pars Bitumen
What is Gilsonite?
Gilsonite, also known as Natural Asphalt or Asphaltite, is a naturally occurring solid hydrocarbon resin found primarily in specific geological formations. It is black and glossy in appearance and exhibits excellent adhesive, waterproofing, and insulating properties. Unlike synthetic bitumen, Gilsonite forms naturally through the solidification of petroleum over millions of years.
Chemical Composition and Properties
Gilsonite is composed mainly of asphaltenes and resins, with a high carbon content and low ash level. Its softening point ranges between 140°C and 250°C, depending on purity and grade. It dissolves easily in aromatic and aliphatic solvents such as toluene and xylene, making it highly versatile for industrial applications.
Applications of Gilsonite.
At Pars Bitumen, we supply premium-grade Gilsonite suitable for various industries.
Gilsonite Applications:
Its unique natural characteristics make it ideal for:
Bitumen and Asphalt Modification: Enhances hardness, durability, and weather resistance of road asphalt.
Oil and Gas Drilling: Used as a loss circulation material (LCM) and shale stabilizer in drilling fluids.
Ink and Paint Production: Improves gloss, color stability, and adhesion.
Foundry Industry: Acts as a carbon additive for molding sands, improving casting quality.
Waterproofing and Insulation: Provides superior sealing and resistance in construction materials.
Uniqueness:
What makes Gilsonite so special is its unique natural combination, enriched by Nitrogen, Beta-Carotenes and with low sulfur. This makes Gilsonite a multipurpose additive, high-performance, and a cost-effective solution in different applications.
Consumptions:
Mainly, Gilsonite is consumed in many countries world-wide for different applications such as production of paint, ink, and stain, used in Iron casting, as an Asphalt binder and recycled Asphalt to build roads with longer life time, improves wellbore stability, drilling efficiencies (drilling fluid additives), and filter cake development.
And Finally, Because of its special compatibility, Gilsonite is frequently used to harden softer petroleum products.
DRILLING FLUIDS
Gilsonite uintaite is the only drilling fluid additive that provides all of these benefits:
- Controls fluid loss and seepage
- Stabilizes shales
- Prevents lost circulation
- Strengthens the wellbore to increase wellbore stability
- Minimizes differential sticking
- Promotes effective filter cake development
- Performs in oil- and water-based drilling muds
- Performs in HP/HT environments
- Minimizes HSE risks
Gilsonite prevents formation damage
Gilsonite® uintaite forms a physical and chemical bond with permeable formations, creating an effective seal to prevent the passage of drilling fluid. By uniquely functioning as both a malleable and solid plugging agent, Gilsonite® controls fluid loss and seepage, prevents lost circulation and protects reactive and low-reactive shale surfaces, even at elevated bottomhole temperatures.
Proven to strengthen the wellbore
HP/HT wells, shales and under pressured zones require specialized drilling fluids and wellbore-strengthening techniques. Adding Gilsonite® uintaite to an OBM, SBM or WBM strengthens the well by:
- Reducing pore pressure transmission and sealing micro-fractures in shale and low-porosity sands
- Keeping interbedding formations intact
- Developing effective filter cake
- Providing a “smear effect” that creates a continuous protective sealant along the wellbore wall
CEMENTING
For more than 50 years, the industry has depended on Gilsonite® uintaite as a lost circulation material and a critical component for primary cementing operations in some of the world’s toughest drilling environments.
It is proven that, adding Gilsonite® during cementing operations enhances the characteristics that are critical to effectively cementing the casing, isolating hydrocarbon formations and preventing annular gas flow.
With its unique physical and chemical properties, Gilsonite® uintaite provides a range of important benefits in slurry and set cement that are unmatched by any other single additive.
Cement slurry benefits
- Increases yield
- Reduces slurry weight
- Controls free water
- Lowers slurry water ratio
- Promotes favorable rheologies resulting in lower ECDs
- Prevents lost circulation
- Scours wellbore/enhances mud removal
Set cement benefits
- Maintains compressive strength, unlike coal or fly ash
- Increases flexibility
- Reduces cracking
- Heals microfissures
- Reduces permeability
- Strengthens bond to the formation and the casing
- Reduces environmental risk
- Assures zonal isolation

ASPHALT
HOT MIX
It is apparent that, as an asphalt binder modifier, the unique properties of Gilsonite® uintaite make a road that is less susceptible to high-temperature and deformation performance issues. When these modified binders are used in recycled asphalt pavements, Gilsonite® adds back what time has taken from the old asphalt, making it easier to use more of this recycled material.
The Gilsonite®-modified asphalt binder will produce a stronger road that can be thinner by nearly 20 percent compared with other pavements. For more information about this application, please contact us.
As an aggregate modifier, Gilsonite® uintaite can be added directly at the hot mix plant with no additional equipment. The excellent bonding properties of Gilsonite® will produce a high-strength, high-performance pavement that also resists water stripping.
- High strength and durability
- Superior deformation performance
- Reduced pavement thickness
- Reduced temperature susceptibility
- Increased resistance to water stripping
FOUNDRY
For your complex, high-value iron castings, Gilsonite® uintaite performs like no other carbon additive. Its naturally superior properties mean high-quality castings with better finish and fewer imperfections.
- Three times as much gas generated vs. sea coal for better mold release
- High lustrous carbon for better finish
- Reductive atmosphere for less reaction between mold and casting for fewer imperfections
INKS, PAINTS AND STAINS
INKS
When you read a newspaper or magazine, you touch the benefits of Gilsonite®. The majority of the newspapers printed in the U.S., Europe, Japan and other locations throughout the world rely on Gilsonite® to make the “no rub” inks their readers demand.
The jet black in many heatset printed magazines and high-quality publications simply would not be possible without the excellent carbon black dispersion properties of Gilsonite®.
Gilsonite® delivers economic performance too. It is more cost-effective than hydrocarbon and phenolic resins. For premium performance, you can rely on Gilsonite® to be Naturally Better®.
- Superior binding properties for rub-resistant high-performance inks
- Unique properties make it an excellent agent for carbon black dispersion
- Cost-effective alternative ink additive to hydrocarbon resins, phenolic resins and metal resonates
PAINTS AND STAINS
Because of the unique properties of Gilsonite® uintaite, it gives paint an excellent bond to almost any material that needs to be protected from the elements. It is a critical high-performance, low-cost paint additive for anticorrosive paints, underbody paints and pipe coatings.
The superior performance of Gilsonite® means you can find it in the majority of wood stains produced in the U.S. In this application, the unique properties of Gilsonite® make it both a binder to protect the wood, and a pigment that gives a deep, rich color that won’t fade over time. Gilsonite® additive is Naturally Better® and you just can’t get this performance with any other natural material or synthetic.
- Superior binding properties for many materials
- UV light stability
- Fade-resistant transparent pigment gives a deep, rich color to wood stains
